The Friends see this as a temporary action by the CCFO and a first step toward refinancing the rail line and the tourist train under new management.
“The CCFO deserves our support and commendation for having rapidly risen to the occasion by announcing its intention to find the funding to keep the train in the region. We are happy to see that local municipalities, the region, and the Quebec and Federal governments seem to be willing to rapidly come to the assistance of the CCFO”, said John Trent, president of the association. “We also think it is crucial that Wakefield, the municipalities, the hotel and restaurant industries and the Chambers of Commerce as well as individual citizens announce their whole hearted support.”
The Friends support the train because of its contributions over two decades to the Outaouais including millions of dollars in revenues, the attraction of thousands of tourists annually, and the provision of full- and part-time employment. Moreover, the train has become a regional icon that puts the Outaouais on the international map.
The Friends recognize that more than new money is required to give new life to the tourist steam train. Future train operations will also require a new business plan, a revitalized ownership and management structure, and a new vision for the future.
`”For several months now the Friends have been discussing alternative forms of ownership of the rail line and the train itself with other interested partners. We hope to have a definitive plan to announce in the coming weeks,” concluded Nicole DesRoches, vice-president of the Friends.

train à vapeur Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield par la Compagnie de chemin de fer de l’Outaouais (CCFO) dans les 30 jours. Les Amis voient cette action comme une
mesure transitoire de la part de la CCFO et un premier pas vers le refinancement de la ligne du chemin de fer et du train touristique sous une
nouvelle gérance.
« La CCFO mérite notre soutien et notre appréciation d’avoir agi aussi rapidement en annonçant son intention de trouver les fonds nécessaires afin
de garder le train dans notre région. Nous sommes heureux de constater que les municipalités, la région, les gouvernements québécois et canadien semblent vouloir agir rapidement afin d’aider la CCFO », de dire John Trent président de l’association les Amis du train à vapeur. « Nous croyons important que Wakefield, les municipalités, l’industrie hôtelière et de restauration, de même que les chambres de commerce et individus apportent publiquement leur soutien au projet »
Les Amis appuient le train car il contribue depuis deux décennies à l’apport de millions de dollars en revenus, au passage de milliers de touristes et à la création d’emploi à temps plein et partiel en Outaouais. Il est devenu un symbole de notre région à l’International.
Cependant les Amis reconnaissent qu’il faut de nouveaux investissements afin d’insuffler une nouvelle vie au train à vapeur. Il est nécessaire de compléter un nouveau plan d’affaires, une forme de propriété et de gestion revitalisée et une nouvelle vision d’avenir.
« Depuis plusieurs mois, les Amis discutent d’une alternative à la formule de propriété actuelle du chemin de fer et du train (2 entités séparées en ce
moment) avec divers partenaires intéressés et nous espérons avoir une annonce à faire d’ici quelques semaines quant à notre proposition », conclut Nicole DesRoches, vice-présidente des Amis.
